Oxford Club Show Kidlington Nov 2014

A reasonably trouble free drive up to this show via the A34. This one is the last Show on the calender and saw many faces from all around the country as it’s a central location. I got a space in the hall car park but for those arriving after 8.30 the main town car park just a few minutes away and free to boot.

I like to do the early entry for this one rather than stalling as sometimes its good to just wander about look for bits and pieces, have a buttie and cuppa (reasonably priced), natter and talk.  After this a drive back home in time for lunch.

There were some nice freshly dug items on offer. Top of the tree had to be the local blue lip Codds from Blakes. I came away with a few lids and transferred items of stoneware.

Also a sneak preview of the of David Burtons Antique Sealed Bottles out just after Christmas. All I can say is Wow!!! well worth the money going to become a standard reference text on the subject. Pre order a copy today from BBR  (see links) at £170 (£80 off RRP). I’ll post more later on this it deserves a post of it’s own.

BBR Winter wonders Nov sale results

You can download the sale results for This BBR Sale direct from their website. The assemblage looked quite well balanced with offerings from most bottle and advertizing categories. From the Dorset perspective there were two items which caught my eye from the sale. A rather scarce Pettey’s dairies cream pot Lot 26 made a healthy £90 and Lot 166 the iconic F.W. Edwards Cyclists Favorite Ginger beer Dorchester  £42 which seemed quite reasonable.

Alton Show Nov 2014

Wow seriously good show very busy from gathering in the car park at 7.30am to close of play 2pm. Where did all that time go. I think the Alton take on the event was best worth a look at the quality of items on offer. Whilst doing so look at the other U-tube links and you will see that this show has been consistent for a very long period of time. Well done chaps long may it continue. I was busy and got the camera out for just a short period of time when the crowds were at their height. From the Dorset perspective there were a few choice items on offer and some made their way back to Dorset.

Just a couple of pics from behind stall perspective.

Dr Roberts Poor Mans Friend ointment Bridport

Poor mans friend ointment was one of Dorset’s most famous household names. From humble beginnings in the 1790’s Dr Roberts ointment was destined to become a household brand name under the Beach and Barnicott partnership. The commoner pots are often dug up nationwide and globally. What you don’t see are the early other items used by the firm. I’ve shown a few below along with a C1900 ad.  Back in August 2003 the bulk of the important items in the ‘Beach and Barnicott sale’ held in Dorchester was secured by Bridport Museum. This included the original recipe for the ointment. They are now displaying the items which are important items of Dorsets social history. Entry is free.

You can read more about the history of the ointment on Paul Barkers ointment pot website.

Club meeting Nov 2014

There was a good attendance for Novembers club night with lots of talking about the up and coming shows in November There is Alton on the 16th , Kidlington the 29th and BBR have slotted in another Auction on the 22nd . This makes for a busy month for club members to add to their expanding collections. (See links and show dates for more information).

nov13nov14

The competitions were well supported With Dorset Stoneware in class 1 showing a nice Bedford and Burniston Match striker, Witt Dominion ointment, some mini muff warmers with named Bournemouth retailers and some Verwood pottery items Costrels and a named money box.

nov9nov10nov8

The four black and white lids showed some impressive pictorials and some nice green poisons.

nov6nov3nov4nov5nov7

Club members are less active diggers but had managed to prise out a Strawsons codd and a fine Palaeolithic handaxe from the Bournemouth terrace gravels reflecting the wide range of interests the club members have.

nov2nov1

In the best bought class club members were most active and the Frouds Dorchester Hamilton was admired but narrowly piped from first place by the bellermine which had originated from a local car boot sale,  showing that there are still good finds to be made for diligent searchers. In the sad finds there was a wee 4 gallon C 1840 4 gallon Lyme flagon / stone jar. Just inside the Dorset boarder not much has surfaced over the years from Lyme and this one despite missing handle bore an early Powell potters mark and was a welcome addition to a members collection.

South Western Mineral Water Company GB’s

The South Western Mineral water company was one of Dorset’s super giant Companys. Starting out in Wimborne and trading as far as Swanage to Southampton. Their bottles chart their rise in growth by the Town names recorded on them. The ginger beer bottles  show this quite well and it’s a case of spot the difference.

Dorset Mineral Water bottles do well on Ebay

I think many Club members looked on last week as a significant Dorset Hamilton from Dorchester made just over 1K on Ebay. The C 1840/50 Hamilton used by Frouds Dorchester was keenly chased and secured by a club member . frouds dorch2frouds dorch1

In fact it was a interesting week as another Dorset Mineral Hamilton type Barret and Elers stick stopperd bottle originally used by Edwin Roberts of  Shaftsbury also made low hundreds. This was significant as of the ones in collections it was the first to retain it’s stopper and shows that Barret and Elers tried to persuade bottle users to use their patent stopper by using the then most popular form the egg ended/ Hamilton bottle. Hiram Codd did exactly the same thing with his Codd Hamilton Hybrid types.edwin roberts stick stopper with stick
